Odeon is a movie theater brand operating in the United Kingdom, Ireland as well as Norway, which together with UCI Cinemas and Nordic Cinema Team belongs to the Odeon Cinemas Group subsidiary of AMC Theatres. It uses the well-known name of the Odeon cinema circuit initially presented in Britain in 1930.
The initial Odeon cinema was opened up by Oscar Deutsch in 1928, in Brierley Hillside, Staffordshire (currently West Midlands), although originally called “Picture House”. The very first cinema to use the Odeon trademark name was Deutsch’s movie theater at Perry Barr, Birmingham in 1930. Ten years later Odeon became part of the Ranking Organisation who continued their ownership of the circuit for an additional sixty years.
Through a number of sales as well as purchases in the very early 2000s the business was purchased by Dry land, which merged Odeon and also UCI Cinemas to develop Odeon UCI Cinemas Group. A lot of UCI cinemas then took the Odeon brand in 2006. Terra Firma/UCI offered the company to AMC Theatres in November 2016. Ironically, UCI was initially developed via the merger of AMC UK and also Cinema International Corporation in 1989.
As of 2016, Odeon is the largest cinema chain in the UK by market share (although the Irish movie theaters were also included within this figure).
